Use your Flash Drive as a virtual RAM?

NOTE* This method works only for 2GB/4GB/8GB RAM PCs.

It's not RAM but a swap space, when the System runs out of physical RAM it uses your flash drive. As long as you are using Windows 10, 8, 7, or Vista. Windows has a built-in feature to entirely allocate your USB flash drive as RAM. Unfortunately theirs no such feature for MacOs.

1. Insert your USB flash drive.

2. Go to 'This PC' and locate your flash drive.

3. Right-click on your flash drive, You need not format the drive to proceed, have at least 4GB space available. Go to Properties.

4. A property Dialogue box appears, click on 'ReadyBoost' tab.

5. There are 3 Radio buttons, Default radio is checked on 'Do not use this device', below there are two options, the second (Dedicate this device to ReadyBoost) will use the maximum space the System wants to, and the third is customizable space you want to. I prefer going with the second one.

6. Click on 'Apply' and then click 'OK'. You won't see any drastic difference but you can perform multitasking a bit faster.

You can connect multiple Pendrives to get better results! :)

In order to revert back to your Normal flash drive.

  • Repeat the same process from 1 – 4, Now check on first radio button ‘Do not use this device’. Click on ‘Apply’ and then click ‘OK’. *
